Occupational therapists provide skills for the job of living. Through purposeful activities, occupational therapists assist children reach optimal independence in their daily living. A child’s occupation includes: playing, feeding, dressing, bathing, learning, etc. The occupational therapist works on creating the most effective child-environment match by strengthening the child’s underlying skills (sensory integration, fine motor, eye-hand coordination, etc.), teaching compensatory techniques to the child/family, and/or adapting the environment (e.g. providing a pencil grip, slant board, seat cushion, footstool, modifying the work, etc.). Through collaboration and skilled techniques, the occupational therapist works to ensure the child is functioning at his or her highest potential while creating a fun environment for growth and development.
